Operating a Self Drive Hire fleet presents one of the most significant risks to insurers of all types of fleet insurance policies. As a result, very few insurers wish to participate in the market place and those that do, are extremely selective as to which operators they will insure focusing on those in rural locations with significant experience.
Finch have been advising operators of Self Drive Hire fleets for over twenty years and as such, understand exactly what it takes to make a fleet perform well. Our insurer partners recognise our expertise thus making us one of the few brokers in the UK with such a broad insurer panel for this class.
Some of the features that we are able to offer to our clients include:
- Blanket insurance certificates.
- Direct access to the Motor Insurance Database allowing immediate amendments.
- Cover for vehicles whilst they are both on and off hire.
- No requirements to specify the names of the drivers.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How many vehicles can I insure on a Self Drive Hire Insurance policy?
The minimum number of vehicles that can insured on a fleet policy is three vehicles. There is no maximum and we currently look after clients with fleets greater than 1000 vehicles. - Is Legal Expenses included as standard on a Self Drive Hire Insurance policy?
This is dependent on the insurer but our team will point out to you when this cover is included as standard. If it is not included as standard we can provide you with a standalone Legal Expenses policy tailored to suit your fleet. - Am I covered for vehicles whilst they are off-hire?
Again, each policy varies dependant on who underwrites the insurance however this will usually be specified on your schedule. Should you have any questions please call us on 08450 750 773. Finch Group M&P have access to many Motor Trade Insurance products should your fleet policy not cover this risk. - What is the minimum and deposit clause on my Self Drive Hire Insurance policy?
Minimum and Deposit Premiums. The premium is typically calculated using projections of a Company’s annual turnover and wage roll. The insurer assesses the risk according to various factors such as the type of business undertaken, previous claims experience etc. The assessment determines a ‘deposit’ premium for the risk, which is payable when the policy is incepted.
When the policy renewal is then being discussed insurers will ask for a declaration of the Company’s actual turnover and wage roll for the previous 12 months. If the actual amounts exceed the projected amounts there is typically an additional premium to pay. If, however, the amount falls below the projections, there would not be a return premium, hence ‘minimum’ premium. This is due to the deposit premium being calculated to be proportionate to the risk, so an amount lower than the ‘minimum’ premium would not be acceptable.
